Through a Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of
Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance, Drakontas will partner with Drexel
University and BKForensics to train the law enforcement community about crimes
committed using mobile, handheld devices and related investigative forensic
techniques and tools
CAMDEN, NJ– Drakontas LLC announced today that the Bureau of Justice Assistance,
an office of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs had awarded it a
Cooperative Agreement to develop and implement a first-of-its-kind training and
technical assistance program for law enforcement professionals about crimes and
investigative techniques related to mobile, handheld devices, including cellular
telephones, smartphones, tablets, gaming platforms and GPS-enabled personal
navigation devices.
“Today, more than ever before, criminals are exploiting mobile, handheld technologies
to facilitate traditional crimes through text messaging, embedded chat capabilities in
smartphone applications, and other unmonitored communications channels enabled
by these platforms. “These capabilities often give rise to new methods for criminal
activity, thereby making law enforcement’s job increasingly difficult,” said Dr. Brian
Regli, CEO of Drakontas LLC and co-Principal Investigator of the Cooperative
Agreement. “Handheld devices hold vast amounts of data that law enforcement can
extract during an investigation; however, without proper training of these technologies,
law enforcement professionals will quickly lose the upper hand in combating criminals
in their use of handheld technologies for illicit purposes.”
Drakontas, in partnership with Drexel University and BKForensics, a software and
training provider based in Warrington, PA, will develop a distance learning and train-
the-trainer program for State and local law enforcement to educate them on the threats
and vulnerabilities of handheld technologies, how criminals are exploiting them, and
the appropriate forensic techniques for locating critical information and data on these
devices during their investigations.
